Ballads & The Brain- CP is the MASTERMIND music needs.
Sincere and Soulful. Chatting with CPTheGenius is like a warm latte from “Central Perk”. Yes, I know that fictional coffee house is from a popular sit-com, but the feel-good vibe is all the same. You could tell right away that the Florissant area native has a passion for his craft. Imbedded with a humble music background and top tier sound engineering skills, this underdog has what it takes to be the next NOW, and we’re HEAR for it.

Chris “CPTheGenius” Lawshe, began his musical journey in one of the best places of origin– church. “I grew up in church, and my mom was always singing, taking me all over the place. So, I started picking around on instruments.”, says Lawshe. “At the tender age of 12, I discovered this beauty called FL Studio.”, he grins. “Spent most of my time as a producer, and for the past couple of years, I decided I’d pick up a microphone.”
The 30 yr. old singer/producer grew up listening to classics such as The Temptations. “I’m real big on live instrumentation.”, he shares. “That R&B sound is kind of where I found my place in a weird kind of way.” CP also admires the late “king of pop”, Michael Jackson. “More modern, my favorite artist is J. Cole. You could probably hear a little Drake in my sound as well.”

CP’s says his approach to music is “telling a story that’s worth telling, but melodically without compromising lyrical content.” The artist shares that his Christian faith anchors his choice of verbiage. “I try and keep a positive message. I stay away from talking about drugs, and bad about our women. I talk about real relationship situations that are relatable but approaching it from a light that there’s better stuff ahead of the troubles that come.”
Lawshe’s first recorded song was actually a “comedic gift”. “I made it as a joke for my friends who were having a baby. I made it to surprise them at their baby shower that they asked me to DJ for.”, he recalls. “About halfway through making it, I was like “this wasn’t as funny as I thought it was gonna be.” I played it at the baby shower, and I remember sitting there, and a lady asked me where she can hear it. The next day, I made a Distrokid account and uploaded it.” From that moment, he took his talent and gift more seriously.

In August 2022, CPTheGenius released that melodic gift, “Lil Baby (Baby Shower Song)” on streaming platforms, followed by “Desperate”, featuring Von Kody. His debut album, “Exposure Therapy” was released November of the same year. As of early 2024, CP has released several singles, two full studio albums (including “Promises” in 2023), and an EP titled “I Had Help”. His latest single, “Love Is Ours”, was released in December 2023.
CPTheGenius is currently working on new music, features and collaborations. His new album, “Woke Up On A Saturday”, is due to be released in March 2024. “This new project is more of me approaching the mainstream kind of sound but still staying true to my roots, and just writing love songs.” CPTheGenius brings it all to the table, craft, creativity, and Billboard worthy content. I truly believe his BEST is yet to come.
